For many horse lovers, riding across a deserted beach is often high on their list of ‘must dos’. On this trip, you’ll have the opportunity, four times no less, to ride a traditional trail revealed only at low tide, across the black and golden sands of Longufjorur, with the mystical Snaefells glacier providing the backdrop. Nowhere else in Iceland can riders and mounts travel for hours without any obstacles to slow down the pace hence this is a perfect opportunity to ride the tolt, the unique gait for which the pure-bred Icelandic horse is famous.
Siggi and Olof are the hosts for this memorable trip. Siggi knows the Longufjorur trail like no other and expertly leads the group of horse and riders along its beautiful course. As the trail is determined by the tides, it can begin at any time of the day or even last long into the night, when in June, it is likely to be bathed in the glow of the midnight sun. Even in August, the lingering summer sun provides some wonderful sunsets. Should the tide not coincide favourably with your first day, an alternative but equally scenic trail will be ridden a little further inland – the remaining three rides will be on the beach.
The Snaefellsnes Peninsula stretches out into the sea off the west coast of Iceland. On a clear day, the outline of the volcano can be seen across the bay from Reykjavik. Spend the first and last nights of the holiday in the capital and perhaps visit one of the many top quality restaurants, sampling some delicious Icelandic specialities. Breakfast is included whilst in Reykjavik. During the riding tour enjoy full board accommodation at the Stori-Kalfalaekur Farm, where accommodation is in rooms which sleep up to four. Facilities are shared and are of a comfortable standard and the food is hearty country fare, prepared from local ingredients. After a day out in the saddle, relax in the farm’s hot tub.
Please note this tour is aimed at intermediate and more experienced riders. Travel tips will be sent once the booking is confirmed. It is recommended that you bring knee-high rubber boots and your own helmet to ensure a perfect fit although riding helmets are available at the farm. The use of saddle bags and rain wear are provided for the duration of the riding tour.
